All of the words this week are homophones (words that sound the same but have different spellings and meanings). Please practice the spelling and definitions of these words at home and be on lookout for other homophones. The words in italics are our challenge spelling words.  Let’s have a great week!

"The Giver" Movie

I heard over the weekend that the movie for "The Giver" is coming out next summer! It is starring Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, Meryl Streep, and Taylor Swift. Those of you in my class know that this is one of my favorite books, and I am so excited to see this film. If you haven't read the book you should definitely do so!

I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend, and now are ready to get back into the swing of school! We have many things coming up in the next month… we finished our Chris Van Allsburg author study, and now we will be gearing up for the Science Fair (more information on that next week), as well as continuing to work on writing long compositions and answering open response questions. It would be helpful if you will reinforce the meaning of these words at home with your child.  Also, on this newsletter you will find our spelling words for the week. The words in italics are our challenge spelling words. Let’s have a great week!

Unit 3, Week 1 (continued)- January 13, 2014

This week we are continuing our Chris Van Allsburg author study, and for a final culminating activity the students will be creating board games based on one of Van Allsburg’s books. Make sure you ask your child what book they are working with. In Science we are beginning a unit on simple machines and are starting to think out our Science Fair projects (don’t worry, we will be completing these in class!) This week’s spelling words are fourth grade sight words (same words as last week), which are words that fourth graders are expected to be able to read and spell with 100% accuracy, though they are typically misspelled by many. Please practice these words at home as well. Let’s have a great week!
